It is with great regret that we inform you of the passing of William Frankland, MBE at the age of 108. The world-renowned British allergist contributed greatly to progress in our field, including the first controlled clinical trial of allergen immunotherapy, which demonstrated its efficacy (published in 1954), and the development of pollen counting in 1953 and its subsequent popularisation as a regular piece of weather-related information to the public. In June 2015, at the age of 103, he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his service to allergy. Well past his 100th birthday, he continued to write for medical journals, attend international scientific conferences and make media appearances, imparting his knowledge and wisdom, and portraying the truly impressive dedication and passion he had for our field of medicine. It was a great privilege for our Academy that Bill Frankland was EAACI president from 1977 to 1980. An inspiration to all of us, he will be sorely missed. The entire EAACI Family extends their deepest condolences to his family and friends.
