“Asthma and Allergy: bridging the gap between basic and clinical science”
Approximately 100 participants from almost all European countries attended the first GA2LEN/EAACI Summer School in Rotterdam. All students had the opportunity to listen to over 30 lectures given by well respected basic scientists and physicians regarding the origin, immunopathology, diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and prevention of asthma.
The Golden Tulip Rotterdam-Center hotel, located downtown next to the Erasmus bridge, provided an ideal venue for this meeting. All lectures and interactive sessions took place on the top floor of the hotel, while the scheduled workshops included a theoretical and practical approach to issues, such as experimentation with animal models, asthma immunopathology and diagnosis and took place in the Erasmus University Hospital of Rotterdam.
The social program included urban BBQs, a boat trip and visit to the windmills, visit to the well known “Pelgrim” brewery, dinner at Euromast with the most explicit view in the city as well as athletic activities (beach volleyball) at Maastrand.
On behalf of all participants I would like to thank GA2LEN and EAACI for their financial support, which made it feasible for all junior applicants to attend this summer school. Moreover, I would like to congratulate the Local Organizing Committee and Gert-Jan Braunstahl in particular for their excellent organization, which turned this meeting into a great success. Last but not least, I would like to thank Deirdre Owerstrom for her continuous contribution and support in all junior events and activities.
